Capilano U's First Official 24 Hour Spin-a-Thon
~~ Organize a team...Spin for 24 Hours...Have a Blast...Raise money and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes ~~

On Saturday May 23, 2009 the Marketing Association of Capilano Students (MACS) will be holding a Cyclebetes 24 hour Spin-a-thon where all dollars raised will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Cyclebetes 2009 is the legacy of Team H2V – the 5 man cycling team who in September 2007, cycled across Canada at break neck speed raising close to 1,000,000 for juvenile diabetes and netting a Guinness World Record. The epic ride was spawned by a Vancouver father’s promise to his daughter to help find a cure for her juvenile diabetes before she graduated high school.

Cyclebetes is all about people coming together to help find a cure for diabetes. It’s also a unique opportunity to show a sense of community and responsibility and to be a leader among friends and relatives. This is an opportunity to be part of an extraordinary journey, to encourage physical activity as a core motivation that takes us beyond just living life – to loving life.

The event will be organized and executed by Cap Business students, and lead by members of the marketing association. Every year MACS, will try to do something to give back to the community - this year we have chosen juvenile diabetes research. This event will also be a great opportunity to bring the whole University together under one roof, for one cause.

Our Vision

To create a unity among students, faculty, and alumni at Capilano University as well as the community and anyone interested in spinning for the cause.

Our goals:

• To raise a minimum of $10,000, for the JDRF by the end of May 2009.
• Recruit a minimum of 100 participants to take place in the Spin-a-thon.

So what you need to do:

1. Tell your friends, family and coworkers about the Spinathon and form a team. This event is not exclusive to Capilano students so TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW!! Teams of 8 to 12 are preferred – the bigger your team the less time you will be spinning the bikes for so plan accordingly!!

2. Raise money and awareness – get friends, family, coworkers or businesses to sponsor you or your team if they cannot join your team. It’s a great way for them to give back if they cannot join a team. The goal is for every team to raise a minimum of $1000. So if you have a team of 10 that’s $100 per person which we believe you can achieve!!

We will also have entertainment at the event, food, drinks and prizes!

Both NewAd and Rethink are well known companies in Vancouver and employ a fairly young staff so we thought what better way to learn more about marketing than to learn from people who were students not too long ago. We had a great turnout at both events and are looking forward to working with both organizations in the near future.


Networking Workshop
January 2009

Due to great feedback from our Networking Workshop with Neil Hamilton in October 2008, we invited Neil again on January 20 and had a great turnout. The feedback was great yet again and we look forward to holding more Networking Workshops with Mr. Hamilton in the future.

October 2008

The networking workshop took place on Tuesday October, 21 2008 in Cedar 148. The event was open to all business students. MACS was pleased to have guest speaker Neil Hamilton present to a group of about 40 students important tips and information on networking. The event was featured in the Capilano Currier issue 9 on October 27 (for full story please refer to the ‘articles on MACS’ section). We would like to thank our guest speaker Neil Hamilton, everyone who attended, Anducci’s restaurants and Capilano University.


Bring on the Summer
April 2008

In April 2008 MACS organized a charity event which took place at Taylors Crossing pub in North Vancouver. The event consisted of a PayPerView Canucks hockey game, raffle, and a guest speaker. All the proceeds were dontaed to the Lions Gate Hospice Society. The event was a sold out venue and we would like to thank all the sponsors, community, Capilano University, Taylors Crossing and everyone who came to support a great cause and enjoy a fun evening.

Students learn business networking skills

Attention all business students: the social season is underway. In keeping with the traditions of the Capilano School of Business, the skill workshops offered to students have commenced, with the first one of the semester having taken place this past Tuesday.

On October 21, 2008, the Capilano Business Undergraduate Society (CBUS) held a networking workshop, hosted by Neil Hamilton of the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, at Capilano University.

The lecture was held in the Cedar 148 hall from 11:30 a.m. until one p.m. The event was an opportunity for students interested in expanding their social and professional network to learn valuable resources and skills necessary to climb the corporate ladder. The workshop included complimentary lunch and notebook and entry into a raffle for a $35 gift certificate from a North Shore restaurant.

Neil Hamilton, the guest speaker at the event, is the president of the North Shore Business Success Group, as well as the Senior Investment Advisor for Remax Commercial Advantage. He is an established businessman on the North Shore and in Greater Vancouver. His speech focused on the benefits of networking as a business tool. He encouraged students to begin building relationships with those around them and to serve others by connecting them with individuals who may help them down the road. “Networking is about building and maintaining personal relationships,” he said in his speech. “It is about giving, not taking.”

His key message was to “initiate connections now, as they will grow into rewarding relationships in the future.” His lecture included pointers on social etiquette, personal grooming, networking resources, and the value of meeting the “right people.”

Paul Dangerfield, Dean of the School of Business, gave a short speech at the event and said that students should start now: “Take advantage of small groups like this to practice these skills. Make slip-ups when you are young, so that you don’t make them during that 10-million-dollar deal.” Srdjana Kasic of CBUS added that “in bringing in real professionals to share knowledge, we can learn from their mistakes and not make them ourselves!”

This event was the first in what will be a series of charity and social events sponsored by CBUS throughout the year. The students in attendance responded positively to this first lecture and are optimistic about upcoming events. The question-and-answer format was particularly useful to students who were able to ask specific questions about networking as it applies to them personally.

Connor Halloran, a third year business student, said that he now knows “where to start, where to go, and how to do it.” Duncan Joseph, a fourth year student, noted that the lecture was a “great source of information on etiquette and resources for future networking.” Sam Green, a student and member of CBUS, was delighted to see “someone who wants to get involved with students and help them develop professionally.”

Grant Daisley, director of the CBUS Marketing Association, is open to suggestions about future events. “We want to know what the students want to see. We want to provide valuable information and tools to first and second year students, allowing them to build skills for their future.”
